Netflix Unveils Three New Indian Originals

Netflix is expanding its India slate with the addition of three new originals, Leila, Ghoul and Crocodile, which will be streamed worldwide.

Leila is set in the near-future and revolves around Shalini, a free-thinking woman in search of the daughter she lost upon her arrest 16 years earlier. The series is from writer and executive producer Urmi Juvekar and is based on the book of the same name by Prayaag Akbar.

Horror series Ghoul is based on Arabic folklore and is set in a covert detention centee where Nida, a newly minted interrogator who turned in her own father as an anti-government activist, arrives to discover that some of the terrorists held there are not of this world. Written and directed by Patrick Graham, the series will star Radhika Apte (currently seen in Sony Pictures India's female hygiene drama PadMan) and Manav Kaul.

Crocodile is described as a young-adult murder-mystery penned by Binky Mendez and is set in the western seaside state of Goa. When her best friend goes missing, Mira sets out on her own investigation, uncovering secrets among her friends, romantic relationships and community.

A release date for the new shows was not announced.

Netflix is eyeing India for aggressive expansion and its existing slate includes its first Indian original, the upcoming drama Sacred Games, which will be followed by the cricket series Selection Day and the spy caper Bard of Blood. CEO Reed Hastings is set to appear in New Delhi, where he is a speaker at the Economic Times Global Business Summit, which runs Friday-Saturday.
